Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez has, on Thursday, spoken out over both the future of midfielder Frenkie de Jong, and the club’s plans for the January transfer window.
Torres amongst targets
The subject of incomings and outgoings alike has of course proven a major topic of conversation when it comes to matters at the Camp Nou of late.
This comes as the latest instillation on the Blaugrana’s bench, club legend Xavi, sets about building a squad capable of reestablishing itself at the top of not only Spanish, but European football as a whole.
In turn, a whole host of high-profile stars, particularly in the attacking third, have been tipped to make the move to the Catalan capital during the January transfer window.
The most persistent links have surrounded Manchester City standout Ferran Torres, a player whom club president Joan Laporta confirmed earlier today has indeed emerged as a winter target:
‘He [Torres] is one of the players we have in our sights, but there are many others. You have to wait and see how everything goes,’ the Barcelona chief explained to TV3.
‘Not for sale’
When it comes to potential departures from Catalunya, meanwhile, all of Ousmane Dembele, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Sergino Dest and even Frenkie de Jong have been named as possible avenues towards raising much-needed funds.
If the latest comments on the part of the man in charge at the Camp Nou are anything to go by, however, then, at the very least, one of these four stars will be going nowhere following the turn of the year.
Speaking to the media ahead of Barcelona’s meeting with Real Betis this weekend, Xavi was drawn on the fresh speculation linking Frenkie de Jong with an exit from the club.
The Spaniard, however, was quick to assure that de Jong is absolutely ‘not for sale’.
From here, the Blaugrana boss was also drawn on the club’s plans for the January window, with Xavi having confirmed that the transfer chiefs in Catalunya are already hard at work in an effort to ‘strengthen’ his squad.
Not only that but, significantly, the tactician pointed towards likely sales, too, in confirming that ‘someone has to leave’, in the case of a new addition.
