Everton have reportedly upped their interest in Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand as rumours over a possible exit for Rafa Benitez intensify.
The Toffees poor run of results has seen the future of Benitez pulled into sharp focus in recent days. His days at the club seem numbered. And it was reported on Friday that chairman Bill Kenwright had called a crisis meeting over the Spaniard’s future.
Many names have been put forward as possible replacements. Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has tipped ex-Everton forward Wayne Rooney to take over from the 61-year-old.
“He’s building his way up and I’m certain he will be a Premier League manager soon and Everton could be the next step for him,” he told Betfair via FLW.
And reports in Spain claim Hjulmand is the ‘main candidate’ to replace him should he fail. BT in Denmark (via Sport Witness) have now taken things further.
They state that Everton have ‘gone hunting’ and are keen to gather as much information as possible about the 49-year-old.
The report adds that the Goodison Park hierarchy are doing ‘concrete research’ on the former Mainz chief. They want to know everything about him from management style, personality and how he handles the media.
Hjulmand impressing with Denmark
Hjulmand took over coaching duties with the Danes on July 1 2020, replacing veteran Age Hareide in the role. He has guided the Red and White to 18 wins from 26 games at the helm.
And his stock rose even higher after leading his charges to the smei-finals of the summer’s delayed European Championship. They lost 2-1 to England in the last-four following a controversial penalty awarded to the Three Lions.
The Scandinavians have kept up their solid form, winning nine of 10 qualifiers for the 2020 World Cup. They booked their spot in Qatar with a four-point cushion over second-placed Scotland.
It is clear that Hjulmand is doing an excellent job and getting the best out of his players. However, has made it clear he is not going to quit his post any time soon as he wants to take the side to next year’s Middle East showpiece.
But Everton are continuing to monitor the situation as they want to make sure they get their next appointment right.
